Arab Card Games

This Saturday I had two of my Qatari friends over to play some card games. Qataris, like most Muslims, do not gamble but that does not stop them from playing card games for entertainment.

So while eating chips and dip they taught me two card games currently popular in Qatar.

1) “Hand” (Yes, an English word. It is not called by the Arabic word for “hand” (yad))

This game is similar to gin rummy except that it is played with two decks and your hand is 14 cards. Much like Rummy you gather three of a kinds, four of a kinds, and runs of suited cards but because you play with two decks any 3 or 4 of a kind must have cards of different suits. Your four Kings cannot contain two King of diamonds. However you cannot put down your runs/kinds while you play -- you have to wait until you have all 14 cards in runs and kinds before you can put them down. Also, unlike Rummy, with the exception of the very first play you cannot pick up the card that's been discarded by the previous player unless you are using it to put your 14-card hand down. This means you need to keep track of what cards get discarded since you will have no chance to get them later and possibly change your strategy once certain cards you need have been discarded by other players. There are also two jokers in the deck and they are wild but you can only use one of them to complete your hand. If for some reason you have both jokers then you will have to discard one of them, typically when you finish your hand.

Scoring is unusual. Lowest score wins. A player who finishes the hand loses 60 points and the other players get 200 points. However there are also multipliers: finishing by discarding a joker is double points, having your hand all the same color is double points, having your hand all the same suit I think is worth even more and so on. I believe there are all sorts of local rules and variants that adjusts the scores as well (for example, one of my Qatari friends said his friends tend to play that if someone completed their hand by picking up someone else's discard then the player who made that discard gains 50 additional points). You play a total of nine rounds and whoever has the least points wins.

Because you can never pick up the card that's been discarded everyone spends the early rounds simply drawing the top card and quickly discarding. The game is fast, people play with a lot of speed so that you hopefully will not be able to keep track of what's been discarded.

This game can get serious, in the comments section some guy is, like, all-caps freaking out about aspects of the rules. Just ask other people at the table how to play and they'll help you.

2) Brazillia (also Arabic for "Brazilian woman" but may be coincidental, my friends had no idea why it's called that)

[May 19, 2011 update: my friend Abdulla did some research and discovered two things:

1) in North America the game is known as buraco. The link has a better description than my blog post.

2) it likely got its Qatar name because a member of the royal family was introduced to it during a trip to Brazil and he introduced it to Qatar. That sounds like an urban legend to me though.]

This game also requires two decks. Players are dealt 11 cards and much like Rummy you have to do runs/kinds. Two side decks of 11 cards each are also dealt. The difference here is you can drop run/kinds once you have three or more and can add to them as the game progresses (so if you have three Kings dropped and draw a King you can simply add it to the three on the table already) but they don't count for a score unless you have seven cards (a run of seven or seven of a kind). Anytime when it is your turn you can pick up the discard pile -- but you have to pick up the entire discard pile.

2s are wild but you can only use a single 2 to complete any of the run/kinds you drop. Once you have included a 2 with a run/kind you cannot get it back, even if you draw the card that the 2 was representing. You can play that card though and have the 2 be a different card in the run. So for example if you put down 9-10-2-Q-K of spades, and later draw the Jack of Spades, you can put it down and now have 2-9-10-J-Q-K, with the 2 being an 8 or A.

You cannot get rid of the last card in your hand unless it is used to complete a run/kind of seven cards, though some house rules allow you to put the last card in the discard pile. Once that is done you're allowed to pick up a stack of 11 cards (previously dealt and kept to the side). After that once you have no cards you can grab the second stack of 11, if there are no stacks remaining the game is over.

When the game ends you count up your score. You get 100 points for every group of seven cards you put down with a bonus 100 if no wilds were used in the seven cards, 100 points for being the first to finish, bonus points if a 2 was used in it but not as a wildcard, -100 if your team never managed to pick up one of the extra stacks of 11, and then you also add up the value of the cards on the table (3-7 worth 5, 8-K and wilds worth 10, Aces worth 15) but subtract the value of the cards that are still in your hand. There are also other little things you can do to get points which I'm sure varies by who’s playing. My friends play a variant that when you're dealing out the cards for the side stacks if you picked up a stack of 22 cards then that is worth 100 points as well.

If after the first round someone has more than 1000 points and other players have less than 1000 points then in the next round the players with more than 1000 points cannot drop any run/suits unless the point value of that is worth 75 points or more. Winner is the first to 2000 points.

If there are four players then you play two teams of two. Once you put cards down your partner can put cards on it as well to help complete the run of seven (so if you put down 7-8-9-10 of diamonds and your partner has the Jack of diamonds he can put it down during his turn). In a four player game you don't have to put down a run if you pick up the discard pile. And no you're not allowed to tell your partner what cards are in your hand.

I will try playing these card games again next time my friends and I meet up, which should allow me to understand what people are playing next time I go to a shisha café. Playing card games are popular amongst the Arab clientele there.

My wife says your an idiot and that's not how you play the game. She says you can use both jokers if you have them and you can only use a discarded card if you have 51 points to put down. You don't have to wait until the end to use a discarded card and put all your 14 cards down at once. You can use a discarded card at any time if you can put 51 points down. If you do that and win the winner gets -30, and the other player gets plus whatever the points in their hand adds up to. Has anyone else heard of this version of the rules?

I'm Brazilian... The card game that you know as "Brasilla", is well played rummy game in Brazil and Italy. We call "Buraco" (Brazil) or "Burraco" (Italy). In USA they have a similar game: Canasta.

Thank you for the update Henrique. As far as I know from my Qatari friends the game came here from Brazil, hence the name.

The game you refer to as Burraco I've heard called bariba as well. I am looking for the first game you refer to as hand which i've heard refered to as quatorze on my android tablet but no luck so far....

We play a game similar to this called "Albatosh" (14 in Arabic) but with rules like the others posted here. You get 14 cards, meld 3 card (or more) runs and sets. play with 2 jokers, can't come down until you get 51. JOkers- 15, A- 11, 10-K - 10, everything else face value. you can take jokers if you have the matching card (sets need all 4 cards before J can be taken). Need a discard to go out. Scoring: values shown above count against you. Winner gets +30. If you don't go down you get an automatic -100. if you go down concealled with out discarding on any other player's cards all points are doubled (you get +60, points in opponents hands get doubled or if they didn't come down they get -200). We play 10 hands and the lowest points wins. FUN GAME!!!

There are a lot of games that every family should make it as a hobby just like the card games.

Seems like there are a number of variants of the fun game Hand (as with most games).
I found the set of rules for Hand at the following site to be very helpful. They show the rules for Hand, and the parent home page on that site has a ton of other games too:

Your wrong

Unknown said...

Your wrong because
#1- the game is called HEND, NOT HAND
#2- you can go down if you need that card but must have minimum 51points,
#3- you can finish either by committing HEND WHICH MEANS WHEN YOU DROP ALL 14 CARDS IN SPREADS WITHOUT ATTACHING CARDS OR, BY FORM OF DE-MON WHICH CONSISTS OF EITHER DROPPING ALL 13 CARDS AND ATTACHING 1CARD, OR DROPPING 1 SPREAD under 51points but attaching all cards at once, or dropping a spread of 51 points or more and slowly attaching cards ever time it comes back around to you.

If you get HEND YOU GET -60 POINTS YOUR OPONENTS GET 200POINTS EACH IF THEY DIDN'T DROP ANY SPREADS, IF THEY DID THEN YOU COUNT THE POINTS IN THEIR HANDS AND IT GETS DOUBLED, PICTURES ARE 10POINTS JOKERS 15 POINTS ACE 11POINTS, AND NUMBER CARDS equals itself,

With DE-MON WINNER OF THAT ROUND GETS -30POINTS OPPONENTS GET 100 POINTS MAX, IF DROPPED SPREADS YOU COUNT IN THEIR HANDS AND NOT DOUBLE THE POINTS.

To win this game you play 7rounds, who ever has the least amount points wins sometimes if your leading by 521 points you don't need to play the 6th round, or by 261points you don't need to play the 7th round, but you can end the game as early as the the 4th round if you get 4strait hens in a row and your OPONENTS get 200POINTS 4strait hens in a row.

Unknown said...

This HEND game is played 2 different ways when played with or without money, but you need choose which way you want to play it before the game begins.

For example #1 some players play 50 or 51 points before you can drop a spread,

Example #2 if playing without money if a player notices he/she is short a card or have more than 14 cards in the middle of the game or when the round has ended you must repeat that round again, must re-shuffle, even if player picks out of turn, cause has to go in same rotation.

If your playing with money, and notices a player has Les or extra cards, then the player has to put his cards in the discard pile, still pluck a tire when it's his turn but goes automatically in the discard pile.

And if the oponent catches HEND before running out of cards then the person whom has placed his cards in the discard pile gets 200 points, if the winner of that round gets DE-MON then instead he gets 100 points. If no winners for that round cause out of pluck cards then you must reshuffle that round and everyone gets back into the game, even the person caught with more or less cards.

Unknown said...

This game HEND, you can't cheat even if you wanted to, because you can't mess the game for others meaning if there's no way you can catch up to win the final round or even to have a chance to catch up to play in the 7th or 6th round you can't mess it up for other for example if your losing by a lot of points the only way you can catch up is by commiting HEND SOMETIMES WITH MINIMUM AMOUNT OF POINTS FROM 1ST PLACE, because by you going down and trying to go for DE-MON YOU ARE HELPING 1ST PLACE OPONENT TO END THE THE ROUND OR GAME BY ATTACHING HIS CARDS ON YOURS and then you making it harder for 2nd 3rd place opponents to catch up

ALSO LET'S SAY YOU NEED HEND WITH 30POINTS ON 1ST PLACE PLAYER, THEN IF YOU CATCH HEND AND 1ST PLACE ONLY HAS 2CARDS ON HIM, THE MOST U CAN CATCH HIM WITH IS 20POINTS SO YOU CAN'T COMMIT THE HEND EVEN IF YOU GOT IT, YOU HAVE TO CONTINUE THE ROUND PLAY DEFENSE ON THE PERSON AFTER SO THAT HE DOESN'T END THE GAME SO YOU CAN HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE IF PLUCK CARDS RUN OUT, CAUSE IF THEY RUN OUT YOU REPEAT THE ROUND AGAIN BY RE-SHUFFLING CARDS

Unknown said...

And if it's 7th round, if 1st place doesn't get caught by the 3rd shuffle he automatically wins, when your out of pluck cards.

If it's 6th round and pluck cards keep running out you can play any round before the 7th round unlimited times.

Also would like to ad from previous comments in the part when you comit DEMON that pretty much means if you go down with spreads that total 51 or more points doesn't have to just be 51 points, also if u go down with 13 or less cards and attach 1 or more cards to other players spreads is considered DI-MON OR DE-MON YOU GET MINUS 30 OPPONENT GETS 100 POINTS IF HE DIDN'T DROP SPREADS, BUT IF DID DROP SPREADS THEN YOU COUNT WHAT IS IN HIS HAND.

ALSO THIS IS THE JOKER RULE YOU PLAY WITH BOTH JOKERS, WHEN YOU SHUFFLE AND DEAL THE 1ST PERSON GET 15 CARDS THE REST GET 14 CARDS, THE ONE WITH 15 PLAYS FIRST, he must throw a card not pluck a card, first player throws a card in the discard pile he doesn't pluck a card. But before he does that, the dealer plucks 1card and sticks half of it under the deck face up if it's the Joker card that card must go back in the deck, if it's any card but not the ACE, THEN WHO EVEN HAS THE ACE OF SUITED CARD IS THE JOKER,

AND WHO EVER HAS THE JOKER JOKER IT IS THE ACE OF WHAT EVER SUIT SHOWING. AND THEN IF THE DEALER PLUCKS AN ACE TO PUT UNDER THE DECK THEN WHO EVER HAS THE JOKER JOKER, IS THE JOKER card.

And if the Joker card is used in a spread that looks like straight (5,6,7,8 or J,Q,K) then you can steal the Joker with only 1card, but if the Joker is placed with a 3of a kind (9,9,9 or J, J, J) then you must have the 2opposite suits of that kind to steal the Joker card unless someone has attached 1card to that spread then you can steal it with 1card, sometimes if your first place and second place is having a hard time of dropping usually you make it very easy for 3rd or last place to steal the Joker so that you can knock out or knock behind second place. Other idiots like to place the Joker on a burnt card si that no one can steal the joker, you can do it either way.

Also by rule if anyone has 4pairs of the the same suit for example
2-4diamonds
2-6of hearts
2-QUEEN OF SPADES
2-2DIAMONDS
he can if he want ask for a re-deal if no one wants to then you reveal your 4pairs same suit, and it's automatic redeal, why you ask and not do quickly cause you want to test the waters see who has a strong or a week hand most times 1 or 2 will be like no, no re-deal then you want re-deal, sometimes it can be a bluff so that you can re-deal and vise versa but if everyone agrees for re-deal you don't have to reveal your cards, you do it only if at least 1 person doesn't want re-deal.

Also sometimes you might 4pairs with only 2pairs and 2jokers, or 3pairs 1joker, but if your cards are different zip codes with 1joker and it's the final round and you need a lot of points to catch up your best bet is wait to see what your oponents want if they all want re-deal you play your cards, and if they want re-deal you try to get rid of your high points first if they are not part of your spreads to make it harder for them to drop towards the end of the game,

Remember cause you need 51 points or more to drop spreads, low spreads will make you lose unless you have at least 1joker, cause you have 14 cards
3 spreads of 6 or less not a good chance for u, let's count
6 6 6
5 5 5
2 3 4
=42points the only chance you have here is if someone throws you an ace,

So people like bigger cards spreads
Cause if you have
5 cards
10 J Q K A With 5 cards spread you have 51points, or
With

10, 10, 10, and any spreads of 7s or higher would bring you down

So if you got dealt cards and you already have 51 points you try to go for FULL HEND, like we would say TUNK OUT IF YOU PLAYED TUNK, MEANING GROW YOUR SPREADS TO WHERE YOU CAN DROP ALL CARDS AT ONCE BETTER CHANCE TO CATCH 1ST PLACE NOW IF YOUR PLACE, YOU CAN STILL DO THAT BUT YOUR TAKING A GAMBLE THAT SOMEONE WILL CATCH YOU SO IF YOURE 1ST PLACE BY A LOT OF POINTS YOUR BEST BET IS DROP FAST, AND KEEP SMALL CARDS GET RID OF YOUR HIGH CARDS, AND EVERY ROUND VARIES,

SOME GAMES POINTS ARE VERY CLOSE, SO IF YOU GO DOWN QUICK YOU CAN MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOUR OPPONENT WHO MIGHT BE WAITING TO JUST ATTACH 1 OR 2 CARDS TO FINISH, SO HE CAN USE YOUR SPREADS TO FINISH.

SO IN THIS SITUATION WHEN IS CLOSE GAME I WOULD EITHER PLAY IT AS DROP ALL CARDS AT ONCE, OR BY DROPPING SOME SPREADS YOU KNOCK OUT 1 OR 2 PLAYERS DEPENDING HOW MANY POINTS THEY NEED FROM YOU, YOU JUST NEVER KNOW WHO HAS HOT CARDS SO IF IF YOU CAN ELIMINATE A COUPLE PLAYERS, WHERE YOU CAN MAKE IT A 50/50 SITUATION RATHER THAN
25/25/25/25 OR 33/33/33 BETTER CHANCE SITUATION IS ALWAYS THE KEY.

ANOTHER KEY YOU WOULD KNOW SOMEONE HAS HOT CARDS IF YOU BEGIN TO NOTICE THAT THE PERSON AFTER YOU IS WAITING TO SEE WHAT CARD YOU THROW IN THE DISCARD PILE, THAT MEANS 9 OUT 10 TIMES HE'S ONLY WAITING ON 1CARD.

NORMALLY IF I'M WAITING FOR 1CARD AND I NEED TO WIN WITH FULL HEND -60 AND 200 POINTS, I JUST PLUCK A CARD RIGHT AFTER THE PERSON BEFORE ME PLUCKED A CARD AND BEFORE HE THROW A CARD SO THAT HE DOESN'T THINK I'M WAITING ON A CARD, AND IF HE THROWS ME THE CARD THAT I NEEDED I CAN'T TAKE IT CAUSE I PLUCKED A CARD ALREADY, BUT THAT'S THE ONLY WAY I CAN HAVE HIM HOLD HIS CARDS AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, UNLESS HE JUST HAVE BAD CARDS AND CAN'T DROP SPREADS I DON'T KNOW THAT UNTIL IS LATE IN THE ROUND THEN YOU WAIT FOR HIM DISCARD A CARD IN THE DISCARD PILE.

ANY QUESTIONS JUST ASK I THINK I HAVE COVERED EVERY POINT.
